Australia lights up to welcome New Year 2018

About 1.6 million people were present around the edges of Sydney Harbour bridge to celebrate the festivities. The spectacular Sydney fireworks had an estimated worldwide reach of 1 billion people.

More than 2 million people gathered for New Year's Eve festivities in two major cities of Australia.

Sydney and Melbourne put a spectacular firework show in and around the city centers, reported ABC.

Sydney's Lord Mayor Clover Moore said it was one of the most technologically advanced fireworks display in the world.

"It'll promote Sydney to the world. There'll be a billion viewers out there watching," she said.

Melbourne had one of its biggest show of the year in the CBD. The show put on 14 tonnes of hefty fireworks that were launched from the top of 22 city sites.

Pyrotechnician Rusty Johnston claimed this display bigger than Sydney.

Hobart put up two firework displays with about $65,000 worth of pyrotechnics fired in the skies.

In Canberra, more than 30,000 fireworks were launched as city welcomed the New Year in style.

Thousands attended New Year's Eve celebrations in Adelaide’s famous Elder Park.

Brisbane’s South Bank and Kangaroo Point attracted crowds despite an early storm.

Meanwhile, thousands of onlookers were forced to evacuate Terrigal beach, on the New South Wales central coast, after a barge caught fire during the fireworks display.
