News.com.au has reported that an Indian media group, The Indian Express has stated that an unnamed official from the Board for Cricket In India (BCCI) has made these comments.
“We have no option other than to call off the India-New Zealand series as our banks have decided to freeze BCCI accounts,” the paper quoted the official as saying.
“We don’t want India to be humiliated in front of the world.
“How can we function, how can we hold any games now? Who will make the payment? Freezing a bank account is no joke. An international team is here, and there is so much at stake.”
BCCI has had a long running dispute with Indian Supreme Court which is demanding administrative and governance reforms for the board. The BCCI is run by a bunch of politicians and businessmen and has been criticized for it’s lack of transparency. After a general meeting on Saturday, the board said that it had adopted a number of recommendations given by the Lodha Committee but had also rejected some.
These newspaper reports are being described as the “lowest low” in Indian Cricket.
India sealed the three match test series 2-0 on Monday. The third test is schedules to start in Indore on Saturday. A five-match one day international series is supposed to follow after that.
Despite reports that the rest of the tour is being cancelled due to financial problems, New Zealand is preparing for the third test against India.
