Although, the victim's identity hasn't been released, but police said he appeared to be of Indian sub-continental origin. Two siblings and friends watched as emergency crews searched for the body.
A three-hour long search operation to find the body was suspended on Wednesday night.
Police divers found the body at around 2 PM on Thursday.
Inspector Mark Walker from Wollongong Local Area Command told Illawarra Mercury that witnesses alerted the police who noticed the victim struggling in the water.
“It appears he’s got into difficulties in a gutter that’s formed there, and pretty quickly after he’s gone under water the witnesses haven’t seen him again, so they haven’t been in a position to even render assistance,” he said.
Police are urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at act.crimestoppers.com.au.
