In what's being termed a miracle, an Indian soldier has been found alive after remaining buried under snow for six days.
Lance Naik Hanamanthappa and nine others were buried under 25 feet snow after an avalanche hit an army post on Siachen Glacier at an altitude of 19,600 feet, on February 3.
Army Commnader of Indian Army's Northern Command said the surviving soldier's condition was critical and efforts were being made to evacuate him to a hospital.
"Of the ten soldiers buried under ice, Lance Naik Hanamanthappa has been found alive. All other soldiers are regrettably no more. Medical condition of Lance Naik Thappa is critical, but all attempts are being made to evacuate him to RR hospital in the morning," said Lt. Gen DS Hooda.
The avalanche struck the post close to the 'Line of Control' on Siachen Glacier that's prone to avalanches. The Glacier is claimed by both India and Pakistan, and is heavily militarized.
More troops have died on the glacier-the highest battleground on the plant, from the gruelling conditions than the enemy fire as temperature drops to minus 50 degree celsius during the winter.
In 2012, 140 people died on the Pakistan-controlled part of Siachen Galcier.
