Comedian Kiku Sharda of 'Palak' fame on Comedy Nights with Kapil, has been arrested for allegedly mimicking Dera Sacha Sauda head, Gurmeet Ram Raheem.
Kiku was arrested from the sets of a show in Mumbai by the Haryana police. He was later remanded to 14 day judicial custody.
He was arrreted following a compalint by followers of Gurmeet Ram Raheem that the comedian had hurt their religious sentiments during a show aired on December 27 last year.
He was booked on December 31 under section 295 A of the Indian Penal Code. A case was registered on the complaint of one Uday Singh, the follower of Dera Sacha Sauda.
While talking to media after his arrest, Kiku apologised and said that he was an artist and “presented the programme on the directions of the channel and programme producers”.
“I was given a dress, script to read and directed to act,” he said, adding that he had been booked in this case but no action was taken against others including the TV channel.
In the meanwhile, the dera head tweeted to say that if the comedian had apologised, he had no complaints against him.
In May 2007, Gurmeet Ram Raheem himeslf was in the eye of the storm after donning a dress similar to that of the tenth Sikh master, Guru Gobind Singh, earning the wrath of the Sikh community across the world.
