Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh revealed that he remained in denial for sometime before agreeing to seek medical treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.
The southpaw told Indian film star Amitabh Bachan on his reality TV quiz show Kaun Banega Karodpati it was difficult for him to accept that he was suffering from cancer.
“As an athlete, it was very difficult for me to accept it. When you are playing 6 to 8 hours every day, you don’t expect to suffer from this kind of disease,” said Yuvraj.
He said he continued to play despite knowing he had cancer which exacerbated his condition.
“Eventually, the doctors told me that it would be difficult for me to survive without getting medical treatment,” said Yuvraj.
“I kept neglecting thinking that the doctors were lying, and kept playing. But then my health and game both declined and I was left with no choice but to get medical treatment.”
Yuvraj Singh got emotional recounting his experiences and broke down during the television show where he appeared with Bollywood actress Vidya Balan.
The cricketer also recounted how he hated playing cricket in the beginning and only began going to classes to live up to his dad’s dreams.
Yuvraj Singh was diagnosed with cancer after the 2011 ICC World Cup in which he was the player of the tournament.
Singh underwent cancer treatment in the US.
Yuvraj and Vidya's were playing the KBC game to raise money for the cricketer's NGO on cancer awareness - You We Can. They won 25 lakhs ($50,000) on the show.
