Delhi memorial to add plaques blaming Indira and Rajiv Gandhi for 1984 riots

A memorial being set up by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara committee could include two plaques holding former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi responsible for the 1984 riots as a reminder of “injustice” towards the victims.

According to Hindustan Times the memorial is called “The Wall of Truth” and has been built at Gurdwara Rakabganj near Parliament on an area of 2,500sqm and cost Rs 2.25 crores to build. The memorial, which was opened to the public on Sunday, holds names of thousands of Sikhs who were killed in the riots and also of people from other communities who died trying to save other people.

The report says that two plaques holding former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi responsible for 1984 riots will also be made part of this memorial. The metal plaques are titles “Dastan-e-Indira Gandhi” and “Dastan-e-Rajiv Gandhi”. These plates were presented to DSGMC by the 1984 riot victims council. The plates read,

“Indira, the then Prime Minister, in a self-styled dictatorial manner, ordered the Operation Bluestar thereby attacking the Golden Temple where the Sikh sangat had gathered to commemorate the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev….”

The plate goes on to say that thousands of innocent Sikhs were killed in this operation, sacrileges were committed and the Akal Takht was razed to the ground.

The General secretary of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee, Mr Manjinder Singh said that the plaques tell the truth and that this is what had happened during Operation Bluestar.

“The only thing that we need to talk through is whether these two attackers merit a mention at a memorial in a gurdwara”

It was in 2013 that the decision to build this memorial was made close to the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Singh. The decision then, had attracted some controversy with the Congress-backed SAD opposing the choice of venue. The construction work for this project began in 2014.
