Troubles mount for cash-strapped Amrapali group, as former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has joined the list of disgruntled complainants who have moved the court against the company.
But unlike the 46,000 affected homebuyers who have sued the group for not handing over the promised flats despite making the payments, the ace cricketer has approached the country’s Supreme Court seeking reimbursement of approximately $8 million for his marketing and promotional services.
The petition is yet to be heard by the Supreme Court.
Dhoni was appointed as Amrapali’s brand ambassador in 2009 and he remained associated with the group until 2016 after a large group of deceived buyers launched a scathing social media attack against him for his association with the firm.
His wife, Sakshi, was also involved with the group’s charitable wing.
Tagging the batsman and his wife in their tweets, the residents had asked ‘Captain Cool’ to either end his contract with the real estate group or take responsibility for the undelivered properties.

In February last month, the group’s chairman and managing director Anil Sharma and two of its directors were remanded in custody.
In addition, the apex court also ordered the attachment of their personal properties in lieu of the complaints filed by thousands of home buyers, who have alleged that the group has failed to deliver the promised flats and have misused their funds, including advances from the investors for the projects spread across north India.
