Doctor, IAS officer- this 24 year old quit his job to be a free tutor

Quitting his lucrative civil services job, Roman has chosen to become a full-time educator at one of India's largest free education services 'Unacademy'.

Civil services is among the top career choices in India with millions of students preparing to sit for the UPSC examination every year. But only a few hundred are picked to be, what is known as Indian Administrative Services officers, the gateway to the higher echelones of powerful bureaucracy. 

For twenty-four-year-old Roman Saini after having secured a place for himself in this highly prestegious service, the next logical thing would be to stay in the service and looking forward to a nine pointed ACR (Annual Confidential Reports) from his superiors that rate and officer's performance.

But Roman, clearly isn't the typical babu, as he has bucked the trend by quitting the service to become a full time educator at one of India's largest free education website 'Unacademy', the website, that started off as a YouTube channel focuses on lessons critical for aspirants of government services.

Before joining the Indian Administrative Service, Roman had completed his graduation from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Roman, an assistant collector at Jabalpur joined his friends in turning to e-teaching, quitting their lucrative jobs.
"In 2011, Gaurav Munjal, whom I have known since school as the closest friend called and spoke about his new idea Unacademy which he had started on YouTube and posted a bunch of videos. He had a vision of free education - and he asked me to join him," Roman wrote on his Facebook page.

Unacademy is an online video channel that has more than elevn million video tutorials and boasts of fifty million minutes of online tution that claims to have benefited five hundred thousand aspirants.


"Personally, it was a difficult decision to quit the civil services, as I have utmost respect for it. But I believe in Unacademy’s vision of free education and hence, will be pursuing it full time from now," said Roman.

 

 

n a Facebook post today, Saini wrote, "In 2011, Gaurav Munjal, whom I have known since school as the closest friend, called and spoke about his new idea 'Unacademy' which he had started on YouTube by posting a bunch of videos."

"He (Munjal) had a vision of free education - and he asked me to join him. Four years later, 'Unacademy' is now India's one of the largest YouTube channels with 1.1 crore lessons delivered and over 5 Lakh students benefited," he said.

"Recently, Gaurav and I took a life changing decision, we decided to quit whatever we were doing to pursue this full time," he said in his post.
