The family of an Indian software engineer who took his life is calling for an inquest into his death over concerns of his large personal debts and mysterious behaviour, the ABC reports.

Indian national Aneesh Augustine who worked as a senior software developer at the Commonwealth Bank died on December 28 last year on his way to hospital after being found in a hotel room of a big casino in Sydney.

He was an employee of Tata Consultancy Services and was on deputation in Australia.

Aneesh’s family and friends told the ABC he confided in them about being excluded from the casino due to losing too much money.

After his death, his family found out Aneesh was a regular on the competitive poker playing circuit and had played at the casino.

The family is worried that the 32-year-old may have become a victim of loan sharking or money laundering schemes.

They say they want to know the circumstances of his death.

“For somebody to suddenly leave everything behind, it just doesn’t sound right,” his cousin Sebastian Anthony was quoted as saying.

Aneesh, the sole breadwinner of his family, was a permanent resident in Australia and lived with friends in Sydney.

The family learned that he was under large personal debts.

"We know he was under a lot of debt," said Sebastian.

"We don't know the amount of it, but we're assuming it's at least four or five times his salary."

A note found next to his body suggested Aneesh was "sorry for whatever things I have done".

The police also found a computer and a diary written in Malayalam.

His body was repatriated to India in January this year for his last rites in his home state, Kerala.
