The SES received more than 1,000 emergency calls yeaterday and overnight and atleast three people have been injured in car crashes in Victoria due to freezing conditions on the roads.
SES crews were busiest in the south-eastern suburbs of Frankston, Mornington, Hastings and Carrum Downs.
"Jobs seem to be still coming through as people wake up and discover trees down or traffic hazards," Andrew Murton from the SES said.
Many people were injured after crashing into fallen trees and another car flipped and landed on it's side leaving the driver with head injuries. And another man was injured when his car rolled after hitting black ice near Wonthaggi, in the state's east.
An eight-year-old boy was rescued in freezing conditions on Tuesday night after going missing at Falls Creek.
The boy, who has autism and does not speak, wandered off after tobogganing with his family and was rescued several hours later in snowy conditions in inhospitable terrain.
A road weather alert remains in effect for Melbourne's northern, eastern, and south-eastern suburbs and the Dandenong Ranges.
Almost 5,000 homes across the state are affected by power outages.
A severe weather warning for damaging winds remains current for the South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts.
Temperatures have fallen to as low as minus 8 degrees Celsius in the Alps and are in the low single figures at all other weather bureau sites.
Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) senior forecaster Dean Stewart said the conditions were cold enough for snow in Melbourne's outer east.

"Snow falls to low levels are expected right across southern Victoria overnight and into the early part of this morning," he said.
"[There were] very chilly conditions, [with] some gusts up around [the] 90 kilometres an hour mark around bayside areas, in particular around Melbourne overnight.
"[There was] some local hail and conditions are probably conducive to snow falling on the peaks of the Dandenongs as expected."
Mr Stewart said the arctic blast was good news for the snow fields.

"Temperatures over Alpine areas have been as low as minus 8 degrees overnight," he said.
"They don't get much lower than that during the winter times.
"There's still the chance of further strong wind gusts this morning, particularly about coastal parts of Victoria. Those winds will gradually ease today."
The weather will improve from tomorrow with sunshine and temperatures of about 15C forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
