Comedian-turned-politician Gurpreet Ghuggi has been appointed the new convener of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab on Sunday.
45-year-old Ghuggi replaces Sucha Singh Chhotepur who was sacked last month following an alleged cash-for-ticket video sting, the charge Chhotepur vehemently denied.
Ghuggi’s elevation within the party is being seen as curtains on Chhotepur’s chances of returning as convener of the party. According to some earlier reports, the party had shown some placatory gestures towards the former convener.
The AAP political affairs committee met in New Delhi to clear Ghuggi’s name who joined the party nearly six months ago, for the post.
AAP Punjab affairs in-charge Sanjay Singh said Ghuggi will soon meet the organisation heads in the state.
Ghuggi has been put at the helm of the party when AAP is facing a vertical split over the ‘Punjabi versus outsider’ debate.
The party has already asked its 13 central observers appointed by national organisation-building in-charge Durgesh Pathak to go back, Hindustan Times reported.
Quoting party sources, HT reported that Ghuggi was chosen as he was “a young and popular face” in Punjab and would bolster the party’s prospects in the assembly polls.
Ghuggi had earlier said he was impressed with the work done by Delhi chief minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal who brought “practical agenda and approach” to the political landscape to resolve the issues of the people.
Ghuggi was earlier the brand ambassador of the Election Commission of India. He is well known as a comedian and actor who has worked in many Punjabi and Hindi movies.
