An Indian-American woman has been arrested in California, US, for raising thousands of dollars while posing as a cancer patient.
Manisha Nagrani, 40, is facing multiple charges for offences of forgery and impersonation. She is being currently held at San Fransisco County jail.
According to India West, it was sometime around 2014 that Nagrani began posting on her Facebook page that she had been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndromes, a blood disorder affecting stem cells in bone marrow.
She is also alleged to have created several fake profiles that were used for posting lengthy, heart-rending posts about her 'terminal illness'.
According the reports, her supporters began raising funds for Nagrani’s treatments, creating campaigns on multiple web portals. Nagrani’s fundraising pages are no longer visible on gofundme and youcaring, but her giveforward page shows donations of $17,552, with many donations of over $1,000.
Manisha Nagrani was a PR professional who later took to match-making business. She describes herself as a 'Marketing and Advertising' professional on her linkedin profile.
