An Indian national has been arrested and produced before a court for allegedly assaulting a 12-year-old girl on a Sydney train on the New Year’s day.
33-year-old Devanesan Devadakayam had been on the run since January 1 this year after his alleged victim’s family reported the incident to the police.
He was arrested in Perth on Thursday and was flown to Sydney after a court granted his extradition.
Devadakayam was charged with aggravated indecent assault after being brought to Mascot Police Station.
He is accused of indecently assaulting a 12-year-old girl on a Parramatta-bound train after the alleged victim boarded the train at the Central Railway Station with her family.
Police allege the girl sat next to him and Devadakayam indecently assaulted her as her family sat just an arm's length away. He then left the train at Granville Railway Station.
On Sunday, he appeared before the Parramatta bail where the magistrate said he was a flight risk and refused him bail.
"Such appalling incidents occur frequently on packed stations and buses within India,” 9 News quoted Magistrate Rabbidge as saying.
Devadakayam is due in court again on 28th March.
