An Indian couple in their 70s have had their first child with the aid of IVF.
The couple had been unable to conceive throughout their marriage but finally succeeded with the help of donor eggs and an IVF clinic.
The Guardian reported Daljinder Kaur, who is unsure of her age but is believed to be about 72, gave birth last month to a healthy baby boy the couple have named Arman.
She and her husband Mohinder Singh Gill, a 79-year-old farmer, had been ridiculed for their infertility, the Guardian reported, and had adopted a boy in the 1980s, but he had moved to the US to study and had never returned.
Owner of the National Fertility and Test Tube Baby centre in Hisar, Anurag Bishnoi, told the Guardian Mr Gill had had to fight his father in court to be given land to allow him to earn an income.
He said the couple had conceived on their third attempt through his clinic.
"For them it is a time of great happiness," Mr Bishnoi said.
"Especially because her brother, also, didn’t have any children.
"They were two families, and both didn’t have children. In Indian law they don’t allow adoption after 45 years of age.”
Ms Kaur told Agence France-Presse her "life feels complete now" after the birth of her son.
"I am looking after the baby all by myself," she said.
"I feel so full of energy. My husband is also very caring and helps me as much as he can."
Mr Gill told AFP he was not worried about their son's fate after they died.
"People say, what will happen to the child once we die," he said.
"But I have full faith in God. God is omnipotent and omnipresent, he will take care of everything."
