A 25-year-old Indian student died after being stabbed on Christmas day in Christchurch in New Zealand.

Hardeep Singh Deol was allegedly stabbed by a 22-year-old woman who has been arrested and charged. Hardeep was taken to a hospital with critical stab wounds. He passed away on Tuesday morning, The Indian Weekender reports.

The accused has been identified as Franchesca Kororia Borell, who is now facing the murder charge after Hardeep’s death. She was first charged with an attempt to cause grievous bodily harm.

Homicide detectives are not seeking anyone else in connection with the case.

A close friend of Singh told The Indian Weekender that the accused was in a relationship with Hardeep, however, the exact cause of the alleged crime is still not clear.

The arrested woman has reportedly confessed to stabbing Singh.

The Indian community in Christchurch is pooling in resources to repatriate Singh’s body to his hometown in India.

He came to New Zealand on a student visa and was currently on a job search visa after completing his course.
