A 25-year-old Indian national has been killed in a road accident in New Zealand on Sunday.

Harpreet Singh’s car collided with a tourist bus on Sunday morning on state highway 6, south of Queensland, The Indian Weekender reported.

Mr Singh – the sole occupant of the car- died at the scene of the crash.

His paternal grandfather, Nirmal Bhatti described him as a “smart, bright and a generous person”.

“We have lost a gem,” Mr Bhatti said.

The company operating the bus said no one travelling on the bus was injured.

"We understand that the driver of the car passed away at the scene and our condolences go out to their family and friends," the company said.

"The driver of our bus, as well as all 14 passengers on board, are uninjured.”

A freelance photographer who was at the scene told NZ Herald that it appeared to be a head-on crash.

"The car has gone under the bus and bounced back out in the middle of the road."

Fire crews and serious crash investigators attended the incident.

Mr Singh came to New Zealand as an international student seven years ago and was planning to travel to India to meet his family in December.

The Indian Weekender reports that his funeral will take place in Auckland and the arrangements will be made after his body is released by the coroner.
