Kaushal Gandhi’s Skoda Octavia crashed into a stationary truck at a breakneck speed of 119 miles per hour (191 kmph) in February in the UK, killing him instantly.
An inquest heard he made a call to emergency services for assistance as he was unable to stop his car.
He told the man attending his call to 999 service that his car’s speedometer showed a speed of 70 miles per hour, however, he felt he was going much faster, Daily Mail reported.
A recording of the eight-minute call played during the coroner hearing showed Mr. Gandhi struggled to disengage the cruise control of his car which was set to 70 mph, but when he tried to slow down, the began moving at a faster speed.
“My car is not coming out of cruise control.. it is not letting me stop. It (the speedometer) shows 70 mph but I think I am going much faster than this”, Mr. Gandhi told the call handler.
He also said he wasn’t able to stop the car even using the car’s gears.
“I am trying. It is not stopping at neutral.”
The recording showed his attempts to shut off the engine by using the on/off button did not work. “I have kept pressing the button but all it makes is a noise, my speed is increasing.”
Mr. Gandhi’s white Skoda crashed into a parked truck while he was still on the call.
A vehicle expert at Volkswagen- the company that manufactures Skoda cars- told the inquest there was no indication of any errors with the systems of the car 5 seconds before the crash.
