A 26-year-old Indian student has been allegedly shot dead in California, US.

Mamidala Vamshi Chander who hailed from Warangal district of Telangana was killed by a suspected carjacker on Friday while he was returning from a local store in Milpitas after finishing work.

"Vamshi's friends called me on Saturday saying my son is missing and that an incident has taken place wherein a person was shot at. They later informed me that it was Vamshi who got killed," Press Trust of India quoted Vamshi's father Sanjeeva Reddy.

India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Monday that the man accused of killing Vamshi has been arrested.

“I have gotreport from our Consulate in San Francisco. The report says Vamshi was killed by a drug addict on Friday evening at Milpitas.
“The culprit has been arrested. Our Consulate is in touch with your family. We assure you of all help and assistance,” Sushma Swaraj tweeted in response to a tweet by Vamshi’s brother.

Vamshi had gone the US in 2013 and completed his post-graduate degree from the Silicon Valley University.
