An Indian-origin woman has been flown to the hospital in critical condition after she was struck by a car and pinned against a temporary road barrier near Truganina in Melbourne's west.

56-year-old Harwinder Kaur arrived at the spot to inspect the damage to a taxi she owns, in a minor accident at around 2 am on Monday after being informed by the taxi driver.

The woman was pinned against a temporary road crash barrier after being hit by the car while she was inspecting her taxi. The car driver fled after the incident. But the driver of a tow-truck who was already at the spot managed to note down the registration number of the car and reported to the police.

The driver was arrested a short time later and was questioned by officers from the Major Collision Investigation Unit. He was released pending further investigations, 9 News reported.
