India's education minister, Mrs. Smriti Irani's request to the IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) to teach Sanskrit to students sparked strong reactions from the opposition parties and the social media users.

Mrs. Irani told the Indian parliament on Monday that she had requested the IITs, India's top engineering institutes, to "facilitate study of science and technology as reflected in Sanskrit literature".

While the opposition parties accused the government of India of trying impose its cultural agenda over the curriculum, social media went into overdrive to have fun at Mrs. Irani's expense.

Deputy chief minister of Delhi state government, Manish Sisodia seemed to have led the charge on twitter against the union education minister.
