The former first lady of Philippines, Imelda Marcos once famously said: “I did not have three thousand pairs of shoes, I had one thousand and sixty.”

A man arrested by police in Melbourne may well have one more than Ms  Marcos.

The police arrested this 43-year-old man with a penchant for shoes on Monday for allegedly stealing shoes for nearly six years.

According to Victoria Police, residents of four suburbs in the northwest of Melbourne had been reporting the theft of shoes in the local area.

Police arrested the accused on Monday afternoon after a public appeal on social media for information regarding the theft of shoes. The officers allegedly found a large number of shoes at his Mernda home.

The police said when officers searched his house, they found a room full of piles of work boots and sneakers.

The man has been charged with theft and handling stolen goods.

He was given bail to appear in Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on 13 April 2018.

Police alleged that the shoes were taken from the front doors of homes in the Doreen, Mernda, Watsonia North and Craigieburn areas over the past six years.

Police said the shoes will be made available for identification by members of the public at a later date.
