Even as there's no certainty about former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, his wife and former BJP legislator from Amritsar- Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu is joining Congress, Punjab Congress President Captain Amarinder Singh announced on Wednesday.
Former Indian Hockey captain and Akali Dal legislator Pargat Singh will also join the party on November 28.
“I am pleased to announce thatDr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu & Pargat Singh will formally be joining Congress on November 28,” tweeted the former Punjab chief minister.
Mr. Sidhu had earlier formed his own “non-political” front ‘Awaaz-e-Punjab’ with Pargat Singh and Bains brothers- independent MLAs from Ludhiana.
Mr Sidhu reportedly had been in negotiations with the Congress party after he ruled out joining the Aam Aadmi Party.
He earlier confirmed he had a meeting with AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi to discuss his joining the party, however, the former test cricketer said Kejriwal only wanted “yes men” in his party.
Bains Brothers of Ludhiana who are considered a formidable force in the industrial capital of Punjab broke away from the ‘Awaaz-e-Punjab’ front last week to form an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party, putting the nascent Sidhu-led front in jeopardy.
Navjot Sidhu earlier said he would not join the Congress party that is led by former CM Capt Amarinder Singh accusing him of being hand-in-glove with the ruling Badal family.
It’s not clear if Mr Sidhu has received any assurances from the central leadership of Congress with regard to Amarinder Singh. He continues to be in discussion with party, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said.
Mr Sidhu resigned from the upper house of India’s parliament in and subsequently resigned from the Bharatiya Janata party that is currently in power in India.
