New Zealand is proving to be one of the most popular immigration destinations in the world.

Compared to most countries in the world, New Zealand offers a great work-life balance, which is reflected in many international surveys.

In August 2017, the Immigration New Zealand (INZ) implemented changes to the Skilled Migrant and Essential Skills policies to reflect county’s economic needs.

From 15 January this year, the department has decided to increase remuneration thresholds for skilled migration and work visa categories.

According to the INZ website, the thresholds are indexed against the New Zealand median income.

A minimum income threshold for resident visa application under Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) will be increased from NZ$48,860 to NZ$50,523.

With the current arrangement, the minimum income threshold requirement for Essential Skill Work Visa will increase from NZ$41,537 to NZ$42,952.

INZ announced visas that people already hold will not be affected by the decision and the changes to the income thresholds will not affect the duration or conditions of visas that have already been granted.

A new application made on or after 15 January will be assessed against the new threshold.

The decision is in part of the previous changes that were implemented in the Skilled Migrant category from 28 August 2017.
