Clad in a physician's white coat and a stethoscope slung around his neck, 19-year-old Adnan Khurram from the eastern Indian state of Bihar has been reportedly impersonating as a junior doctor at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi for the past five months.
His bluff was called when, during an athletic event at the hospital, a group of doctors found his behaviour suspicious as he could not answer their queries.
According to the police who arrested him following a complaint from the doctors, Mr Khurram used his fake identity to befriend doctors and students at the medical facility and even participated in the institute’s events meant for doctors. He had also managed to get hold of a diary issued only to the doctors.
While the police have still not determined the real reason behind Mr Khurram’s actions, he has however claimed that his main motive behind posing as a doctor was to facilitate treatment of his ailing relative.
During the investigation, it was also found that Mr Khurram had posted pictures of himself in a white coat and a stethoscope on social media.
This is not the first case of impersonation at the country’s prestigious medical institute. Just a few months ago, a police complaint was filed against an imposter claiming to be a faculty member in the hospital’s trauma centre.
