Sikander Imran, a former doctor at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington was sentenced to three years imprisonment on Friday.
The 33-year-old former physician who hails from Pakistan was arrested in May last year and had pleaded guilty to fetal homicide.
According to WJLA TV in Washington, Mr Imran was initially sentenced to twenty years in jail but his sentence was reduced to only three years after his ex-girlfriend Brook Fiske appealed to the court for a lenient sentence.
Imran and Fiske who met in New York had been in an on-and-off relationship for three years. When Ms Fiske found out she was pregnant, she went to discuss the baby’s future with Imran in Washington, where he had recently shifted for a new job. At the time in May 2017, Ms Fiske was 17 weeks pregnant, reports WJLA.
In an interview with WROC, Ms Fiske revealed that Imran didn’t want to have a baby and insisted on her to have an abortion.
When Ms Fiske didn’t agree, he spiked her tea with 800 milligrams of the pill Misoprostol which trigged a premature labour and caused her to miscarry.
“He (Imran) immediately started crying and said that he was a horrible person and that he had done what I thought he did”, a devastated Ms Fiske told WROC.
Mr Imran was taken into custody and charged with premeditated killing of a fetus of another and illegally causing abortion or miscarriage. He was later also charged with assault and altering food, drink and drugs.
During his hearing, Mr Imran’s lawyers contended that he was suffering from mental health issues.
Mr Imran’s medical license has been suspended and he is likely to be deported to Pakistan after completion of his jail term.
