Police have warned people to beware of an online scam targeting buyers with low price cars after several people were duped.
According to police, vehicles are being offered for sale on websites commonly used by buyers.
The seller identifies himself as Steve Rodriguez or Sean Clifton- a member of the Australian Defence Force and is to be deployed overseas. Hence, the low price due to the urgent sale.
Once the deal is locked, buyers are told to transfer money via numerous means to a third party or bank and once the money is received communication all but ceases.
There are some further emails that occasionally get sent but this is seen as nothing more than a delaying tactic so the scammers can withdraw the funds.
The police say a number of buyers have been targeted by the scam throughout Victoria and across Australia.
Buyers have been advised to do thorough research before committing to providing funds.
The scam is targeting buyers on sites such as eBay, Gumtree and Carsales.
IfReports of online scams can also be made to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission via that website.
