RBI to issue new Rs 20 and Rs 50 Banknotes

RBI to introduce new Rs 20 and Rs 50 denomination banknotes soon.

In a media release, The Reserve Bank of India has announced that it will be issuing Rs 20 denomination bank notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 with the insert letter ‘L’ in both number panels. The banknotes will have the signature of Dr Urjit Patel, Governor, Reserve Bank of India and also the year ‘2016’ printed on the reverse of the banknote.

The release also read that,

” The design and security features of these banknotes will be similar to the banknotes of Rs 20 denomination with the ascending font of numerals in both the number panels and without intaglio print issued earlier in Mahatma Gandhi Series- 2005 through Press Release No. 2016-2017/1004.”

It is important to note that all the banknotes in denomination of Rs 20 issued in the past will continue to remain legal tender.

In a separate media release, the Reserve Bank of India also announced that it will be shortly be issuing Rs 50 denomination banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi Series – 2005 as well, without the insert letter in both number panels. These banknotes will also bear the signature of Dr Urjit Patel and have ‘2016’ printed on the reverse of the banknotes.

It is important to note the all the banknotes in the denomination of Rs 50 issued by the Bank in the past will continue to be legal tender.
