Two Canadian sisters of Indian origin have been arrested for allegedly blackmailing a powerful Nigerian businessman.
Jyoti and Kiran Matharoo are facing charges of cyberbullying and running a notorious website to extort money from high-ranking Nigerian individuals.
Their Instagram profiles give a glimpse of Kardashian-like high-profile lifestyle the sisters had been enjoying before running into trouble with the law.
Reports in the Canadian media say that Nigerian police claims to have arrested Kiran and Jyoti with their laptop and iPad containing videos to extort money from Nigerian nationals.
The sisters have been accused of running a website that allegedly published personal details of notable Nigerians, according to a Nigerian news website.
Nigerian media reported that Kiran and Jyoti are accused of attempting to blackmail oil tycoon Femi Otedola, who is listed among the richest billionaires in Africa, by claiming they had evidence of him having an affair.
A local news website claimed the sisters contacted the clients through a third party and demanded they pay “thousands of dollars or risk the release of the recordings, photos and video clips on their website.
Canada’s Global Affairs department said it was providing consular services to “ the Canadian citizens who have been detained in Lagos, Nigeria”, without confirming the identity of the concerned individuals.
