Saru Rana is a social activist, who is known for her voluntary work in the community.
Though she is a member of the Liberal Party but has chosen to run this by-election as an Independent candidate.
Ms Rana told SBS Punjabi that she has received permission from the South Australian Division of the Liberal Party to use the phrase ‘Liberal Independent’ to describe her Enfield candidacy.
“Living in this electorate for over six years, I have a very good understanding of both the need of this area and the disappointment of its residents in their outgoing MP, Labor’s John Rau,” she said.
“In my candidacy, I see immense opportunity to do positive things that will help the electors of Enfield in their daily lives and into the future. That is why I am running to be their representative in our State Parliament.”
An Adelaide resident for over a decade, Ms Rana is a teacher at the Playford International College where she teaches art and design to high school students. She devotes rest of her time working for victims of domestic violence and elderly abuse.

She advocates for women's involvement in sports. She is the founder of a grassroots human rights movement focused on the empowerment of women named ‘Shamshir’.
Ms Rana says she wants to be the voice of the people of her electorate.
“I believe that the foundation of any thriving community should include an elected member working tirelessly to ensure community safety, promotion of positive environments for families to live, students to learn, and business to grow,” she added.
She says she is looking forward to a positive campaign, meeting as many people as possible, learning from them and tackling many challenges.
“We want better and more essential services. Enfield needs more funding to help struggling local sporting clubs with their incredibly positive youth programs.
Ms Rana is not the only Indian-origin candidate for the inner-north seat of Enfield, since a prominent member of Sikh community, Amrik Singh Thandi has also put his hand up for this by-election which is slated to be held on February 9.
