In a landmark move, one street has been given an Indian name in Auckland, New Zealand. A new road, created by way of a subdivision at 172 and 172A Portage Road in Papatoetoe, will be called Deepak Lane.

Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board deputy chair Ross Robertson said that it was the board’s way of recognising the work that other cultures put in for the progress and development of the suburb.

“The two main dominant culture groups residing in Papatoetoe now are Pasifika and Asian. There is a big Indian communityManukau Courier reported him saying.

He said the name signifies the recognition of diversity in the society.

“It’s time that we recognise the contribution that other cultures are making to the community. And what better way than a street name – Deepak Lane – in Papatoetoe?” he said.

This name for the road was suggested by the developer Gagan Preet Singh.
