According to ABC News, Mohamud Hussein, 31, was found injured on the corner of Condell and Napier streets at 11:30pm on Wednesday night, police said. Police performed first aid until paramedics arrived but he later died at the scene.

Police say the man had locked up his taxi near the corner of Napier and Condell streets in Fitzroy at the end of his shift and was walking home when he was attacked.

Detective Inspector Mick Hughes said he was "brutally assaulted" after parking his car nearby.

"[His] dad shares the cab with him, it's actually dad's cab. So just a tragedy for the family.

"He was walking home. Like most people, he keeps to a pretty strict schedule, and dad's started looking for him when he hadn't got home."

A young man, with shoulder length fair hair, wearing dark clothing and carrying a satchel was seen running through the park.

“There is no suggestion he is involved, but he is certainly in the location,” Insp Hughes said.

“We ask him to contact police and come forward.”

The Victorian Taxi Association said it was "shocked and saddened" by the news.

"We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the driver," the VTA said in a statement.

Police have asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestopppersvic.com.au
