Victoria Police says its Highway patrol members caught a teenage driver over-speeding at 197km/h in Berwick in Melbourne’s southeast during the early hours on Wednesday.

Cardinia highway patrol members came across the P-plater driver and his friends when their car was detected clocking more than double the 80km/h speed limit shortly before 1.30am.

The car was pulled over after it stopped at a red light. Four teenagers aged between 16 and 18 were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The driver has had his vehicle impounded for 30 days.

The police is expected to charge the driver with speeding offences, overloaded vehicle and not displaying P-plates.
