While Mr Singh died at the spot, his 22-year-old nephew Guneet Singh who was driving the car suffered a fractured leg and Mr Singh’s elder brother Daljit Singh suffered minor injuries, the West Australian District Court heard on Thursday.
Judge Gillian Braddock said Mr Sidhu was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol but was "not paying sufficient attention" when he failed to slow down and slammed into the sedan.

He was travelling at about 77km/h at the time of the accident, the court heard.

Defence counsel Seamus Rafferty said his client was “remorseful” and “utterly devastated.”

“He could not understand why he did not see that car when it was there to be seen,” Mr Rafferty told the court.

Judge Braddock also acknowledged that the hospitality student was otherwise regarded as a “hardworking, respectful and responsible person.”

“I think of Mr (Gurbir) Singh and I am morally certain that (he) would wish to see you make the most of your life,” she said.

“The best thing you can do in these circumstances is live the best life you can."
The court also noted the deceased Mr Singh was a passionate social worker who had helped in setting up a summer school for impoverished students in India.

Mr Sidhu pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death was given a 14-month suspended sentence and was also banned from driving for two years.

SBS Punjabi reached out to Mr Singh’s Perth-based son Harpreet Singh for comment but could not establish contact as he was travelling overseas.
