Failing a practical driving test will affect you differently after 1 September 2015. From 1 September 2015, if you fail a VicRoads practical driving test you’ll no longer be able to drive in Victoria using your overseas driver licence.
This change applies to all VicRoads practical driving tests including:
- Car driving tests
- Motorcycle learner permit skills assessments
- Motorcycle licence tests
- Heavy vehicle licence tests.
Why is this change being introduced?
Our driving tests are designed to keep Victorian roads safe by ensuring a minimum standard of driving ability. If you’ve failed a practical driving test, you’ve demonstrated that your driving ability isn’t up to the minimum standards. This means it’s not safe for you to drive on Victorian roads.
I’ve failed driving tests in the past. Will this change affect me?
No. This change only applies to practical tests failed on or after 1 September 2015.
What if I’m exempt from tests? Will this change affect me?
Australia recognises driver licences from several countries differently. If you’re not required to take any practical driving tests then you won’t be affected by this change.
Does this change affect interstate or New Zealand driver licence holders?
If you hold an interstate driver licence, you won’t be affected by this change. If you hold a New Zealand driver licence you’re exempt from tests, so you won’t be affected by this change.
What happens if I keep driving after failing a practical driving test?
If you fail a practical driving test your overseas driver licence is no longer valid in Victoria. It’s an offence to drive unlicensed in Victoria, so if you continue to drive you’ll be breaking the law. If you get caught get driving without a driver licence, you may be fined.
How can I legally drive in Victoria?
If you’ve failed a driving test, you’ll need to get a Victorian driver licence or learner permit before you can drive on Victorian roads. To do this, you’ll need to re-sit - and pass - your practical driving test. If you need to improve your driving skills before you re-sit your test, you can apply for a learner permit. This will allow you to practice your driving while accompanied by an experienced driver. Find out more about getting a learner permit.
What happens if I fail a heavy vehicle driving test?
If you’ve been issued with a Victorian driver licence or learner permit, your overseas driver licence is no longer valid in Victoria. This includes any heavy vehicle endorsements you might have on your overseas driver licence. If you fail a heavy vehicle driving test in Victoria you’ll need to re-sit – and pass – this test before you can drive a heavy vehicle in Victoria. VicRoads isn't able to release personal information like test results to third parties without authority from the driver.
