Three Nepali women who aspired for a life in Australia have been allegedly duped of Rs. 4.2 million (AUD 84,000) by a migration agent based in India’s capital, New Delhi.
The Embassy of Nepal received a complaint from three women last week, seeking help to locate Gopal Prasad Limbu- also a Nepali national, a migration agent based in Delhi who has now absconded. The women said Gopal had taken money from them for sending them to Australia on a work visa, Kathmandu Post reported.
The women had camped in a hotel in Delhi for many weeks, waiting to be sent to their dream destination. During their stay in Delhi, the women together forked out Rs. 4.2 million.
They said they were shown visas, which they now realise, are fake.
“For six months, we bought into his elaborate ruse. He used to come up with various excuses about the inordinate delay in departure,” said one of the women.
One the victims, wife of an Indian Army official paid the alleged conman Rs. 2 million (AUD 40,000) for a life in Australia she shared the dream of with her husband. She now regrets the decision.
When the women came to Delhi months ago, they believed everything had been taken care of and they would soon be flying to Australia.
The Nepali Embassy is co-operating with the Indian police in this case. But officials say this is not the only case of this kind.
