A woman and her teenage daughter were forced to jump off a moving train in India in order to escape sexual harassment at the hands of hooligans, the police said.

The alleged incident occurred on Sunday night near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh while the mother-daughter duo was travelling on a train running from Kolkata to Delhi.

The woman told the police that 10-15 men started troubling her and her daughter- a year nine student- as soon as the train left the Howrah station in Kolkata.

She reported the matter to the policemen present in the train and men were order to move to another compartment. However, the woman told the police that the men again came back and again started harassing them.
The dup had no help available with other passengers in the train remaining mute spectators to their ordeal, the mother and the daughter and had to jump off the train when it slowed down near Kanpur station, news agency PTI reported quoting a police officer.

“I reported to the policemen on the train that the men were misbehaving with us but they did not stop. If we had stayed on the train, my daughter would have certainly died. We jumped off the train to save her life,” she told ABP News.

The woman and her daughter were found unconscious along the railway tracks. They were discharged from hospital on Tuesday after being treated for multiple injuries.

Superintendent of Police, Railways, Pradeep Kumar Mishra said a case has been registered against unnamed accused who will face charges of assault with the intent to outrage the modesty of a woman, and also sections of India’s new law against sexual assault of children.
