Aman Singh is a 17-year-old Indian-origin rugby player from Glenmore Park in Sydney.

He has had a ‘successful run’ in the rugby fields so far. At the junior level, he has played for Penrith Panthers under 15, 16 and 17 teams.

He was recently awarded NSW President’s player and Glenmore Park Brumbies Saturday player of the year.

Aman has recently been selected for the junior rugby team of North Sydney - a team which is also known as Sydney Roosters junior club.

“It’s a great moment. This selection will not only give a kick-start to my professional career but will also provide me with the much-needed confidence to do the best of my abilities,” Aman told SBS Punjabi.

“I am still in talks with my manager and hopefully will also have an opportunity with the Melbourne Storm.”

An Indian-origin rugby player

Aman says he is extremely motivated to realise his dream of becoming the first-ever Indian-origin player in the National Rugby League (NRL).

“My father really wants to see this happen. Moreover, it’ll not only help me fulfil my personal goal but also make my family and friends proud."

Aman’s father Ajay Singh is proud of his achievements.

“He has a passion for rugby ever since he was a 6-year-old boy.  It is really amazing to see him grow as a player in the last four years,” said Mr Singh.

“He is very keen, driven and passionate. The next few years will be crucial to see if his hard-work can take him to NRL. It’ll be a proud moment if we could watch him play on the national TV."

A passion for NRL

Though he realises that it would take a lot of hard work and focus before he gets to play in the NRL.

“I know there's a long way to go but hopefully my dream can become a reality one day,” he says.

“I love rugby league and I enjoy going out there playing with my friends and having a great time on and off the field.

“Everyone I've met has always treated me as who I am as a person and player rather than the colour of my skin.

“Playing footy, there are boys from different backgrounds playing but we always treat each other like brothers and racism never exists on the footy field."

Aman credits his parents for all his achievements.

“My parents have been very influential in me being the person I am today. They always push me to do my best in not only rugby but also in life,” he says.
