Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the 2026 Budget includes measures aimed at improving housing affordability for young Australians, including limiting negative gearing to newly built homes. Existing investment properties will be grandfathered under the current rules. In addition, the existing 50 per cent capital gains tax discount will be replaced with inflation-adjusted indexation.
