ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੋਕੜ ਵਾਲ਼ੇ ਇੱਕ 27-ਸਾਲਾ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਮੁੱਛਾਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਆਕਲੈਂਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਨਿਊਜ਼ੀਲੈਂਡ ਦਾ ਕੌਮੀ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਬੀਰਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੋ 'ਇੰਦਰ ਜ਼ੈਲਦਾਰ' ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ਼ ਵੀ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨੇ ਐੱਸ ਬੀ ਐਸ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਨਾਲ਼ ਇੱਕ ਇੰਟਰਵਿਊ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਲੈਣ ਪਿਛਲਾ ਇੱਕ ਕਾਰਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖ-ਪਛਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਜਾਣੂ ਕਰਾਉਣਾ ਵੀ ਸੀ।
"ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਜਿੱਤ ਲਿਆ। ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਦੱਸਣ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਇੱਕ ਮੌਕਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਗੜੀਧਾਰੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਖਾਈ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।"
"ਇਹ ਇਕ ਮਾਣ-ਮੱਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹਾਂ, ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਰੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।"
16 ਫਰਵਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਏ ਇਸ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੇਸ਼ ਭਰ ਤੋਂ 20 ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਯੋਗੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ।
ਬੀਰਿੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤਣ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਟ੍ਰਾਫੀ, ਇੱਕ ਤਮਗਾ, ਕੁਝ ਉਪਹਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਇਨਾਮੀ ਰਾਸ਼ੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ।

It's getting hairy in New Zealand, as people gathered for the NZ Beard & Moustache Competition, held as part of the Meatstock festival at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland.
Birinder Singh twirled his specially-cared for rounded moustache in front of professional barbers who judged his hairy package the best among the top participants across New Zealand.
Mr Singh won a trophy, a medal, moustache grooming products and a monetary reward at this prestigious show which was attended by more than 20 participants.
“It’s a proud moment. I am thrilled and feel like a king. I was crowned first in the moustache category,” he said in an interview with SBS Punjabi.
“The competition was full of passionate, caring and devoted people who are committed to this unique moustache and beard world.”
The 27-year-old Singh was the only participant of Indian origin.
Mr Singh said that he took part in the championship to promote the Sikh identity.

“I am glad that I won it. It’s an opportunity to tell the world how turbaned Sikhs look like,” he said.
"We consider the turban, beard, and moustache the essence of our culture and tradition. Normally I don't wear a turban but I went to this competition wearing one because I wanted to showcase our identity. The turbanators have a rich history and I am proud of who are!"
"It feels really good. The great thing about this appearance is that people look at you and say wow that looks incredible,” he added. “It’s my moment…..I am thrilled and feel like a king!”
Mr Singh got a taste for competition when his friends tagged him in a Facebook post advertised to attract participants in the NZ Beard & Moustache Competition.

“I was quick to raise my hand, why not, was my first reaction,” he said.
“But I wasn't sure at that stage that I’ll end up winning this title. I am happy that the title has given me and my community a sense of pride.
Mr Singh who hails from Patiala, Punjab is now keen to organise a similar competition in his native place to encourage people to grow beards and moustaches.
