You might be surprised to learn that even in neighbouring countries the language of the dog's bark - "woof" varies between languages.


As 2018 kicks off and the world prepares to enter the Year of the Dog, it's the perfect time to appreciate the universal appeal of our four-legged friends.

Beloved by countries all around the world - who might not speak the same language as each other, you'd be forgiven for thinking the language of the dog's bark would be the same across the globe, right?

Wrong.

After SBS Russian spoke to colleagues across many of SBS Radio's diverse language programs, we made the surprising discovery that every language interprets the dog's barking differently - not just "Woof woof" as it is usually known in Australia.
