The federal Education Minister, Simon Birmingham, says the 2016 NAPLAN results are disappointing, especially in light of record spending on education. The 2016 NAPLAN preliminary results show a 1.26 per cent increase in numeracy scores and barely any change in reading or writing across all year levels. Labor and the unions want the Gonski report school funding package restored but the government says spending on schools has already increased and more spending is not the answer.
