Milne resigns while minister orders inquiry into interference in ABC

Unhappy ABC staff outside their offices in Ultimo, Sydney

ABC chairman Justin Milne has resigned after reports he demanded journalists be sacked because the federal government didn't like their reporting. It follows reports Mr Milne sent an email to former ABC managing director, Michelle Guthrie, in May to fire chief economic correspondent Emma Alberici. The union for journalists says any political interference into the public broadcaster is an attack on press freedom. It comes as the federal government has announced an inquiry into the matter.
