Debate over the Adani mine in Queensland has been flagged by Labor as an issue in the by-election for the Melbourne seat of Batman.

Chairman of the Indian multinational company Adani, Gautam Adani, has told a group of Indian business students that coal will help 300 million people in India access electricity.  He says his feelings are hurt by the opposition to the $16Billion mine which if it goes ahead would be one of the largest coal mines in the world.  But the Greens and Labor have distanced themselves from the project with labor leader Bill Shorten seen last week with a group of anti-mine protestors.  The Adani mine will no doubt feature in the upcoming by-election for the seat of Batman in Victoria where the Liberals are not fielding a candidate.
