A NSW state sponsored Helpline received 72 calls from people who were either victims or reporting cases of young girls being forced into marriage. It follows reports of a 9 year old girl whose parents had planned to take to Pakistan and forced into a marriage.

"The new forced marriage legislation in Australia came in 2013, so since 2013 we have now been seeing a gradual increase in people referred to us for help because they are either trying to avoid getting married or they are actually leaving a marriage that they were forced into."
