Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, the prime minister of Samoa, has blamed the slow growth in Samoa's population on women not doing their bit by having more babies and doctors for pushing family planning. We spoke to Professor Ann Brassil, the CEO of Family Planning NSW, who argues that smaller families mean healthier and better choices for mothers and fathers, and better educational opportunities for the children. Please listen to our interview in English.
Family Planning is much more than just birth control. It deals with issues of sexual health, the prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections, responsible and meaningful relationships based on mutual respect and love. It also empowers women with information and support in the choices they make with regards to pregnancy. Ultimately, it is about happy and healthy families.
It is NOT about breeding to get tall males to play for the national rugby team. It is NOT about having children to fetch your cigarettes and massage you in your old age.
