Fears of Chinese influence in Australian politics

The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) has warned of the increasing influence of Chinese donors in local politics. According to the ANU's Professor Rory Medcalf says we "don't know whether the donations are somehow driven, or centrally encouraged by the Chinese Communist Party..." Labor Senator Sam Dastyari was forced to resign from the frontbench last year after admitting that he asked a Chinese donor to pay a personal debt on his behalf.
