Human Rights Commission recommends offshore processing but not in Nauru and Manus Island

The president of the Human Rights Commission, Professor Gillian Triggs has recommended alternatives to offshore processing that will see the closure of detention facilities in Nauru and Manus Island.

"What we're really trying to do is to come up with some positive ideas that allow Australia to defend its national borders, of course -- as a sovereign right, Australia must do so -- but we are suggesting that there are much more diplomatic and collaborative ways of doing it in our region that would deliver the results but would, at the same time, protect national rights and borders."
