Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued a message of support for the families of the people killed when gunmen are said to have opened fire at the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Center during Sunday evening prayers.

Around 40 people were believed to have been at the mosque at the time of the attack.

In a statement, Mr Trudeau condemned what he called a cowardly terrorist act on Muslims in a centre of worship and refuge, adding that Muslim-Canadians are an important part of Canada's national fabric.
