Serbia looked more comfortable, more early in proceedings against Switzerland, after a fifth minute goal from Aleksandar Mitrovic. But Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka hit a swerving strike on a spinning ball just after half-time to level the scores. And then, in the 90th minute, with Serbia bizarrely caught by a counter-attack, Xherdan Shaqiri scored to make Switzerland the first team in this year's World Cup to come from behind to win a game.
The two goals to one final score means Serbia may have to beat Brazil- a daunting task at the best of times- in their final group stage game to have a chance of making the knockout stage.
Serbian coach Mladen Krstajic though, is, at the least, impressively optimistic in depressing circumstances.
Well, from day one, when we saw the draw and the group, many thought that Brazil was the favourite to win the group and to win the championship, but we are in a situation where we need a win against Brazil on matchday three. And we will focus and do whatever we can to try to win. Nothing is impossible in life. We respect their status as the favourites to win, but we are going to prepare. They have some weak spots that we'll try to exploit.
Brazil and Switzerland, joint top of the group on four points, are now in prime position to qualify for the last 16 from group E.
In group D, two Ahmed Musa goals- both well-taken- have given Nigeria an unexpected two-nil win over Iceland.
